After moving South from Connecticut to Wilmington in 2012, we were told about this little island called Ocracoke we should visit for our anniversary. That bit of advice changed our lives forever.
We made reservations at Oscar’s House and met Ann Ehringhaus, the then owner. We fell in love with Ann and with Oscar’s warm and cozy feel. We spent every anniversary with Ann and Oscar’s House and also started coming to the island in June for the Ocrafolk Music and Storytelling Festival where I, Robin, sold my jewelry.
Every time we left the island, we felt like we were leaving the place we were meant to live. And every time we came back, we knew we were home.
When Ann decided it was time to sell Oscar’s, she approached us to see how we’d feel about taking ownership! We knew it was meant to be. After raising three kids, and always following the “rules”, it was now time for US! So we decided to take that leap of faith!

OSCAR’S HOUSE

Located: 1 block from Silver Lake Harbor | 1 mile from the Atlantic Ocean
Yes! We do have central heating and air.
This house has four bedrooms, all with half-baths (sink and toilet). The house has two showers, one inside and one outdoors, which we’ve found people love the most. It is conveniently located about a block from Silver Lake Harbor, and within easy walking distance to shops and wonderful restaurants. In fact, Robin’s jewelry shop is right next door.
THE HOUSE
HISTORY
Oscar’s House was built for the family of Captain Joseph and Eleanor Burrus, Oscar’s parents. Cap’t Joe worked as the last Ocracoke lighthouse keeper, and after World War II the family moved into this house. Oscar worked for years on Ocracoke as a charter fisherman and hunting guide.
In 1984 Oscar’s House became a Bed & Breakfast, and has received guests and friends from all over the world. Many wonderful meals, stories, good times, and some surprises have been shared here.
